Mercury retrograde and "lost ideas"

Mental Mercury Retrograde madness mashes my mind

And now, the astrological version of Alaska’s state flower, the forget-me-not: It’s Mercury retrograde from March 12^th to April 4^th! On your mark, get set…STOP!

About four times a year, a 4-6 week occurrence happens in when Mercury goes retrograde: all types of communication go 'unsteady.' It is often observed that papers are misplaced, documents and important transactions are not processed as planned, people often complain that they can't focus or think clearly, or other matters of sharing information are cast adrift until that point when Mercury once again regains its position as leader and overtakes the Earth in its orbit.

What's a retrograde? A retrograde indicates an internalization process; influences and actions that would be energized for the planet(s) that are in a retro cycle are slower to manifest: they are more ‘inside than outside’ and take longer to complete, comprehend, or activate. As a physical happening, this is when the Earth overtakes the other planet in our respective orbits around the Sun (*the other planets also go “retro”; the only one that doesn’t is the Moon)--and it appears that the slower moving one is going 'backwards.' We have all see this while driving on the highway or in trains: the landscape (or vehicle overtaken) looks to be going in reverse. Of course, that does not really happen, but the optical illusion is there. Mercury is the fastest moving planet that we know of in its orbit around the Sun: it takes approximately 88 days.

In astrological terms, Mercury represents our capacity to communicate and think, thereby "ruling" (or 'sponsoring') all types of mental activities and delivery of thoughts: written and verbal, as well as contracts, signings of such, and the industries that provide these services (phones, computers, electronics). Which signs get zinged the most? Well, Gemini and Virgo, because they're ruled by Mercury. Not that they're exclusive, but they seem to feel it sooner. The same for Gemini and Virgo moon signs and ascendants.

Has this any good potential--aside from feeling that one has lost his or her mind for a temporary period of time or that it's not appropriate to sign that important paper? Yes: some people find they can actually focus more clearly on a single idea during Mercury retrograde. Some writers (myself included) and people who may be considered hyperactive or ADD may find they can actually do more work on a regimented schedule during a Mercury retrograde. I have found some of my better writing efforts have come during a time frame like this.

Why, it's the Transits & Progressions!!

This refers to the counter-clockwise movement of the planets under current cycles against the natural background of your chart. Let’s think of it as your personal "Cosmic Bed & Breakfast."

In personal terms, think of as many as 16* visitors (*with the asteroids, Chiron, and Lilith) “visiting” your home (Life) and the respective houses (wedges) in your chart, depending on the sign on the cusp (sort of a doorman, eh?). Each “guest” receives a different "room" to stay in for their time of residence, depending on their schedule—and each house/wedge is a realm of activity that is activated or emphasized. Preparations need to be made for each “visitor,” in that you either gain “rent-income” for their visit (a positive opportunity phase) or a lesson to be learned and mastered (a frustrating or stressful time—or ultimately a growth process)--in how you choose to handle it).

Each planet-guest receives a measure of comfort—or discomfort—depending on any previous occupants by design from the birth chart. In other words, when a transiting planet “arrives” at a wedge on your chart, it stays for its respective term—like being on a vacation. However, it might be asked to ‘share’ accommodations with any planets that naturally reside there by natural residence on your chart.

So now you’ve got a ‘visitor’ to a particular area of life experience—and depending on how they generate energy, your ‘guest’ may be comfortable—or irritable. Either way, there are lessons to be experienced and learned; “activated” is another term. The “guest” planet(s) will also interact with the natural outlay of planets from the birth chart—so your “guests” may or may not be pleased at the circumstances—hence, the “learning” process in how we choose to adapt and make them “at home.”

The *planets in their transits repeat themselves in timely cycles: Mars moves around the chart every two years; Saturn takes @ 2.5 years; Jupiter visits in a 12-year phase; Uranus has a 7-year cycle; Neptune works its illusions and dissolving trends for @13 years; Pluto may vary between 12-31 years, depending on its unusual orbit. The Sun, although it is the center of our solar system, is also considered to “move” in the chart, as does the Moon. The Sun will naturally follow the 12-month zodiac, and the Moon will change every 2.5+/- days.

I don’t usually emphasize Venus or Mercury because they are more ‘social’ in nature, rather than having long-term significance or emphasis. (They're easier to accommodate.) Nothing like Pluto staying for years at a time--and there's always some sort of unplanned renovation going on when it visits!...and just about everyone is glad to see Saturn leave too because there's SO much work that has to be done while it stays! The door is always open for Jupiter because it usually brings fortune and opportunity. Mars...tends to be a bit upsetting: anything from literally burning down the house to knocking down the walls to build that new exercise room. Uranus...well, you never can tell what will happen--but prepare for the unexpected. And Neptune...never sure if Neptune is EVER going to make an appearance!)

Progressions:

Whereas transits are the current Life Activity events, progressions are more about the Soul's Evolutionary Progress as experienced by the advancement of the planets through the signs over a lifetime. I call progressions "The Butterfly Emerging from the Cocoon" phases of Life.

The primary points & planets that I recommend are the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. They each change signs over specific periods of time, especially the Sun (1 degree per year from the starting degree marker of birth; 30 degrees total) and the Moon (1 degree per month). For example, I was born 24 degrees Aries; at 6 years old, I "evolved" into Taurus. My birth Sun remains the same; I then experienced 30 years of a two-way lesson of Soul Identity as an Aries-Taurus. At age 36, I became a Gemini, and will continue until age 66, when I become a Cancer-Crab.

The Moon also advances in this way each month at one degree, and is very useful to examine trends in social activity, encounters with the public-at-large, and relationship patterns. The other planets also move, especially the inner ones, but I do not use them as frequently unless they reach critical degree points.

Here's another way of viewing it:

· When the Progressed Sun Changes Sign: Depending on how long a person lives, the progressed Sun changes sign perhaps 3 times in the entire life span. The period when the progressed Sun is very late in a sign and is about to change to a new sign (this occurs for about a year) is often a rather critical year in which many changes occur. When the progressed Sun changes signs, there is usually a very clear change in a person's general orientation and responses to his or her environment. Plenty of real-life events are possible (such as relocation, a new job in a new field, etc.), but the common theme is starting fresh—"out with the old and in with the new"—and a marked change in the outlook and attitudes of an individual. Before the progressed Sun changes signs, there can be some fear and dread—even a feeling that things are being "taken" from us. Hasty and poor decisions and a sense of urgency can be characteristic of this period.

· The Progressed Moon — Cycle of Maturity: The progressed Moon moves through the houses of our natal chart, coming full circle in about 27-28 years. The house it is moving through represents areas of our life that come into focus. We recognize our needs in these areas more intensely, although not necessarily clearly. For example, the progressed Moon moving through the 4th house often brings with it a strong need and search for "roots" and basic life definition. Even though our natal Moon sign "reigns" over our emotional needs in a general sense, our focus shifts as the progressed Moon passes through our houses.

In fact, our emotional needs seem to change or shift as the house position changes. The sign of your Progressed Moon indicates the prevailing emotional attitude of that period of time. Also note that if you look into your past and determine when the progressed Moon passed over any one of the four angles in your chart (that is, the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, and IC) you will see that these progressions/passages often mark rather significant times in your life. Also significant is the progression of the Moon to critical degrees, as well as Progressed Moon in aspect to natal planets and points.

· The Progressed Lunation Cycle: This is the cycle from one progressed New Moon to the next (every 27-28 years). Look to the phase of the progressed Sun and progressed Moon. During the progressed New Moon phase, individuals instinctively start a new phase or chapter in their lives. The Crescent phase brings about new challenges and opportunities, as well as adjustments, that don't always feel pleasant, to the new cycle as a purpose is not entirely clear at this point in the cycle.

The First Quarter phase represents a particularly active, building stage, while the Gibbous stage presents a time of refining and fine-tuning. This makes way for the Full Moon phase, which is a time of fruition and accomplishment. This marks the beginning of the progressed waning moon phase, when some things dissolve and one begins to recognize the need to let go. The Disseminating phase is a time of sharing and literally "disseminating" that which has been learned in the waxing phase of the moon. The next phase, the Third Quarter Moon phase, marks a time of one's life when there lies some discontent and dissatisfaction with the way one has been approaching life. This can be a somewhat confusing time, as one instinctively prepares for the final stage of the waning Moon: the Balsamic phase. During this phase, old systems begin to phase out, and there may be a desire for withdrawal and reflection.

· Progressed Planets Conjuncting an Angle of the Natal Chart or Progressed Angles Conjuncting a Natal Planet or Point. These activations involving natal and progressed angles (the Ascendant and Midheaven) generally point to significant personal changes in the native's life.

One of the main topics in psychological astrology (and astrology in general) are the meanings of the planets. As I've mentioned earlier, they represent actions and behavior potentials in our psyche: they're sort of a reflection of how we act and respond, why, and the impact and influences of these actions. Think of the planets as though you're eating something special: what did it taste like, what did you eat, what kind of food source was it, and how do you feel about eating it?

     Obviously, everyone has his or her own preferences--but the planets don't always let us decide what we like. I'm sure someone will say that "Saturn is like being forced to eat those nasty vegetables that {I} don't like." Or maybe Uranus is being offered something unusual and exotic--maybe from another culture.
     Pluto, I imagine, is some sort of laxative--you change when you "digest" Pluto. Neptune is...something that's got some mind-altering nature to it: alcohol, mescaline, or even mushrooms. Mars...well, it's been cooked on a fire; that's for sure, and Venus? Oh, chocolate anytime, please. And good wine or liqueur too.
     The moon is your comfort food: you NEED that to feel better when you're upset. Mercury is brain food: you think better after you've eaten it.
     Jupiter is just a full-blown feast of something you enjoy, and the Sun is that special meal which is your favorite.

So...let's meet the planets again and see what they do (when they're NOT food.)

Elements as the spices of Life

If the elements were seasonings, then they would be the spices of Life that variety is said to bring. They are emotional and sensory keys of behavior and needs that indicate the “temperament” of an individual: how he/she “tastes” their world-at-large. In that manner, using spices and the sensory quality of taste will work here:

Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are “spicy”: “hot” people who are spontaneous, energetic, motivated, aggressive, dramatic, overpowering, royal-in-bearing, or impulsive.

Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are “salty”: “Salt of the Earth” hard workers, fixed in principles and unwilling to yield until moved, grounding, sensuous and touchy-feely, persistent, determined, and willing to bear a burden to get the job done.

Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are “sweet”: “Lighter-than-air” intelligent souls who communicate, question, query, disseminate, and disperse ideas and information; arbitrators and negotiators, graceful presenters of social tact and presentation, social gatherers and coordinators of humanitarian projects and programs.

Like pickles and relish, Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are “sour”: “bitter-at-times” but with a purpose: an awareness of pain, sensitivity, and distress in another person’s psyche. Outbursts of emotions, playing on vulnerabilities and compassion in others, manipulation of affection by acts of display, and mood swings are found here.

The Dark Moon Lilith's cruel methods

As I've written before ("Dark Moon"), the Dark Moon Lilith is a factor which I feel is more important than ever, especially as so many of my clients are writing and asking "Why am I not getting what I want {from relationships} and life, and what can I do about it?" Each time I answer this, I insist they confront Lilith in their chart and to order from me the analysis profile about Her placement. Be warned: this is a dangerous position to ignore--and you do so at the price of your own fate and sorrow.

Lilith — The Dark Moon

This article is, of necessity, a very brief introduction to the presence of Lilith in the astrology chart. She is a complex representative of the more hidden pieces of our psyches, and certainly requires greater treatment and more detailed analysis than is contained here.

The article below is intended only to stir an interest in Lilith's influence in astrology, and is a prelude to a book-in-progress, Lilith: The Dark Moon published in The Second Road newsletter, October 1998 by Catt Foy.

A little-known element in astrology charts, Lilith is known as the "dark Moon" and, as such, represents our "dark" or hidden emotional selves. According to Lois Daton, author of "Lilith, The Planet of the Doodler," the physical existence of Lilith was confirmed by the United States Weather Bureau in 1879. Lilith is the name used for two different celestial bodies - one is located in the asteroid belt and is not our subject here, the other is an invisible body orbiting the earth approximately three times farther away than the Moon, Luna. It is this Lilith which is of interest here.

Lilith's placement in the chart is especially important to women, and represents the power of the original woman. In a man's chart, Lilith's placement will reveal the hidden power struggles or other issues he may have, resolved or unresolved, with the women in his life.

Lilith is perhaps best understood in contrast to her counterpart, the visible Moon, Luna. Luna receives her self-fulfillment and self-definition through the nurturing of others. Lilith is self-fulfilled and self-defined. Luna represents the visible emotions; Lilith is those emotions which remain hidden or secret. Lilith lives behind-the-scenes, usually undetected. She can be sneaky or deceptive, but she can also indicate our ability to be subtle, to guide and manage events and people without being intrusive. She is our ability to be private, and her placement in the chart will tell you what the native feels most secretive about.

As a Moon, Lilith is also associated with mothering, but she is the strength of a mother protecting her cubs. Luna is soft and kind and nurturing. Lilith is strong, a disciplinarian, and will kill any who threaten the well-being of her offspring. Lilith is protective and self-protective. She protects herself from her own toxic emotions, becoming the guardian of shame, guilt, hatred, vengefulness, bitterness, envy and jealousy.

We look for Lilith in our charts to discover which defense mechanisms we employ to hide our wounding. She is also the femme fatale - the sexually powerful woman. She affects dreams, especially sexual ones, and is an influence in trances, hypnotism, the channeling of entities, inter-dimensional beings, and possession.

Here is a brief overview of Lilith's placement in the natal charts. As with anything in astrology, her influence must be interpreted within the context of the total chart.

Lilith in Aries is straight-forward about her sexuality and may use it to feel powerful. Applied in a negative manner, there may be temper tantrums or bratty behavior.

Lilith in Taurus may hide money or possessions, and there will be a great deal of secrecy regarding finances. This can also indicate miserliness, or a refusal to share one's resources with others.

Gemini - When Lilith hides herself among the twins, she may exhibit a chameleon-like ability to be whoever she must be at the moment, hiding her true thoughts and feelings. If used improperly, the native may be considered "two-faced" or be a vicious gossip.

Cancer - Hidden emotions may come out in ways that affect the physical health. When expressed in ways that are healthy, Lilith's influence here makes the native a powerful parent, or an activist for the protection of children. When negative, there may be chronic or psychomatic illness, or the tendency toward martyrdom.

Lilith in Leo wants to be admired, but she'll never admit it. In creative expression, she will do things her own way and never feel obliged to explain herself. Taken to extremes, she becomes the prima donna, demanding and unforgiving.

Lilith in Virgo will often make the native very secretive or repressed in their sexual expression, and there will be much attention to hygiene and health-related details. When negative, Lilith in Virgo can be very cold and aloof, or extremely critical of the habits of others.

Lilith in Libra may find herself concerned with the legalistic side of power. She is a defender of women here, supportive of laws that curtail abuse or sexual crimes. Taken to extremes, Lilith in Libra may be vindictive against those she perceives to be offenders, and in relationships may be clinging, jealous or manipulative.

Scorpio - There are some astrologers who believe that Lilith is the co-ruler of Scorpio, along with Pluto. When placed here, she is powerfully sexual, hypnotic, seductive and wise. When under a negative influence, she can become bitter, vengeful or obsessed.

Lilith in Sagittarius may hide her emotions beneath a facade of humor or a mask of kindness. She may keep her personal philosophies secret from others, keeping her own counsel. In the negative, this placement can indicate haughtiness, self-righteousness, and prejudice.

Lilith in Capricorn will hardly ever share any emotions, and these natives may seem unapproachable. Achievement and status will be the method employed to feed the hidden need for emotional contact. At its extremes, here is the anal retentive who must control everything.

Lilith in Aquarius will probably mask the hidden emotions with a series of ever-changing kaleidoscopic surface emotions, and will seem fascinating and elusive to others. The native may be chimerical, fluttering like a fairy from one situation to the next. At its worst, Lilith in Aquarius is irresponsible, remote, and refuses to listen to others.

Pisces - Lilith is already secretive, and doubly so in Pisces. This is usually the person who has emotional wounding buried so deeply that they don't even know it themselves. Lilith's placement here may instigate behaviors which even the native finds baffling, and is often associated with passive-aggressive and unconscious behavioral patterns.

Solar Return: our "new" birthday and Sun-oppose-Sun: the Challenge

Everyone looks forward to his or her birthday as a time of renewal, celebration, joy, and opportunity. It is a moment when we are "reborn" on Earth. We are also given a "new year" astrologically with a chart that is calibrated to show the events for the next 365 days: the solar return. When our Sun returns its position and sign at our birth date, it is called "Sun conjunct Sun." This is one reason I strongly encourage a consultation with me on a 4x-per-year basis: this is an excellent reason to evaluate what the "new birthday" has to offer.

The solar return actually begins to manifest six weeks prior to our actual birthday, and begins its potentials six weeks afterward. It is like having a new talent, skill, or training program to enhance and develop as a birthday present from the Universe. Robert Hand describes this in his excellent book Planets in Transit:

Sun conjunct Sun

Today is your real birthday, even though it may be a day or two different from your calendar birthday. However, this is the date when the Sun returns to the position it was in when you were born, as the Earth completes a full circuit around the ecliptic path of the Sun.

As would seem appropriate with this transit, today is a day of new beginnings. A new year in your own persona calendar has begun, and the influences you feel today will affect the entire year to come. This does not mean that the whole year will be disappointing if today doesn’t work out exactly as planned, but the planetary influences in effect today will have a great meaning for the year as a whole. Many astrologers find that the chart cast for the exact minute and second that the Sun returns to its birth position (a Solar Return) provides a significant forecast for the year ahead.

The energies you feel today may not be very dynamic, but you do feel as though you ought to be the center of attention in some way. This is a natural effect of a powerful Sun transit and is not just because this occurs on or near your birthday. Nevertheless, despite the subtlety of the energy, this is a day when you should in fact make new beginnings. You are receiving a new impulse from the energy center within you, as symbolized by the Sun.

Therefore, any new venture that you start at this time will ride the crest of this new energy and will very likely come to an acceptable conclusion. Whatever you do or begin today will bear the stamp of your individuality more than anything else. This is the day to assert yourself anew. Plan to let the world know who you are, not arrogantly or smugly, but so that everyone knows you are here. You have needs and wants like everyone else, as well as something to contribute to the world.

However, a similar-but-different phase takes place six months after our birthday when we reach the "Sun oppose Sun" phase. This is often a time of low energy, vitality, and experience for many people. But it does not need to be; instead, it can be considered a chance to reconsider and restructure plans ahead for the remaining six months before the solar return comes again. In effect, it can be a chance to retool and plan again with decisions that rebuild us. This is another time when I strongly recommend clients to meet for another consultation: what have they learned and what has happened with the plans they made? What are they planning to do about it? I consider this a chance to appear before an inner "Cosmic Council" and offer a proposal of action. Robert Hand addresses the circumstances of the Sun-oppose-Sun this way:

This transit occurs six months after your birthday and signifies a time when energies in your life are reaching a culmination. Now is the time to try to bring your affairs to a climax, but do not expect to escape opposition from other people, for others have ambitions that may be in conflict with yours. Be particularly careful with superiors and persons in authority. If you are not careful, you may provoke their opposition, which would be difficult to withstand.

You may find it difficult to make everything work out right, but if you have prepared properly for this time, you will succeed. You must avoid feeling smug, arrogant, and superior. These attitudes just might undo all the progress you have made until this time.

Sometimes this can be a time of failure, when you realize that certain efforts have not worked out and that you must start over. But failures at this time should not be the occasion for feeling defeated. Instead, you should feel that a “life experiment” has not worked out. With the information you have gained, you can launch a whole new enterprise that will avoid the flaws of the one that failed. Very often the failure itself has occurred several months earlier, but the truth about it has just become clear to you now, so this is the time when you are most likely to become discouraged. This may result in a period of low energy, although sometimes the “failure” may be manifested only as a state of tension leading to failure.

Psychologically speaking, events now take place in such a way as to make your individual life stand out in relief against your surroundings and other people. Thus the transit can serve to heighten consciousness and self-awareness. All kinds of personal interaction are extremely important now, and you will gain nothing by withdrawing from others. You probably won’t even be able to.

Even with those aspects of your life that have been working out well and are now reaching a climax, you are not yet past the critical point. To achieve is one thing, but to incorporate these achievements into your life and make them part of your personal growth is something else. You have built structures and organized your life in various ways, and now you will experience the consequences of these structures as they begin to react and influence your life. Yet you still have the creative power to determine how your own creations will recreate you.

I have also noted something about the Sun-oppose-Sun time in my life: I am drawn to people whose birthdays are exactly opposite mine. It is like meeting a bookend-half; a mirror image of myself. Similarly, because astrology deals with the repeating cycles of life, death, and rebirth through reincarnation in order to learn lessons (also seen with the North and South Nodes), I have found something extraordinary about the date of my Sun-oppose-Sun because I am aware of two recent past lives that I experienced. “Get to work and finish up!” says Mars retrograde. Mars, the planet of Action, Assertion, Drive, and Physical Energy, goes “retro” (in a temporary delay) from Jan. 23^rd thru Apr. 13^th. In this time frame, we are given a chance build up our bodies, apply ourselves to jobs and projects left uncompleted, and “get it done” at last. As noted before, a retrograde is when the Earth overtakes another planet in the orbital race around the Sun; we see this effect when we drive or travel and overtake another vehicle (or stationary object): it appears to go “backwards.”

Mars retrograde will inspire us to take up activity in areas (the house placement in your chart) where something has been left behind: unfinished projects, assignments that need resolution, overhauling, and general “apply yourself here” momentum. As with any planet going retrograde, Mars will "rebound" on April 13th and leave its "holding pattern" phase from our viewpoint on Earth, and will actually return to its "starting point" position on June 20th. Therefore, don't be surprised if anything that you've finished during this retro time may come up for a final closure-and-done review by this date in June--also being the first day of Summer!

Being that Mars is in the sign Virgo, we are “assigned personal and social tasks to clean up, fix up, and manage.” This sounds like a great time for those of us living in the northern hemisphere to get ready for the traditional “spring cleaning” of our homes—or if necessary (perhaps Mars in the 12^th house), getting rid of old and outdated psychological issues—and perhaps being proactive on new endeavors.

Boundaries and Personal Issues

I was recently asked about a comment I made that "Scorpios and Virgos are similar in nature." To explain further, I replied, "It's a way that Scorpios and Virgos have about obsession, actually. Virgo has it for maintaining order in their life--or someone else's--and Scorpio about letting someone else INTO their life. All about control."

The Rolling Stones had a song, “Get Off of My Cloud.” With Saturn in Libra right now, individuals and ESPECIALLY those in intimate and professional relationships are learning about “personal space.” How we respect and learn our self-value of “being me” and also recognizing the same for others is a significant lesson that we are learning with Saturn’s guidance. Each sign has its own potential realization of saying to others (and also to the Self) that “These are MY boundaries.”

So how do other signs handle personal space and respecting (or not) those of others? Generally speaking--and this is not specifying EVERYONE in any sign:

(1) Aries will run right over someone's space. "You talking to ME?!"
(2) Taurus thinks whatever they have (or someone else has) belongs to them: "Well, I want it--therefore, I should have it."
(3) Gemini tries to slip past mental barriers with "I'm curious about something you said/think."
(4) Cancer tries to protect their own sensitivity because they can sense so much about other people's feelings (boundaries): "You don't care how I feel!"
(5) Leo just wants to have recognition for their own boundaries; no one else matters as much: "How DARE you defy me?"
(6) Virgo...well..."EVERYTHING has its proper place and space!"
(7) Libra wants to be sure everyone's boundaries are respected and equal: "All is Fair in Love and War."
(8) Scorpio will kill anyone who gets too close to a personal boundary: "None of your damned business!"
(9) Sagittarius wants to expand their boundaries (and that of others): "The bigger, the better!"
(10) Capricorn wants to use their boundaries for gain or success at the expense of others: "I can use this to my advantage."
(11) Aquarius hides within the Collective Group boundaries and avoids commitment: "If you can't see or find me, I'm not required to validate my boundaries. Besides, I might change my view of them without explaining why."
(12) Pisces just doesn't know boundaries; they're too "far out" to maintain them: "Oh, it doesn't matter anyway."

With A Little Help From My Friends - Chiron and Neptune

I think it's valuable to consider another component of the Centaur-Mentor: his role in relationships. The Magi Society (also mentioned here earlier regarding aspects) have a method of using Chiron and Neptune in order to help discern compatibility/synastry between two individuals.

In an example they gave, the connection-bonding between these two celestial objects could indicate a very high level of soul union between two people--or more--depending on the arrangement. There were four individuals, they said, who had a remarkable interlocking pattern of Chiron and Neptune. That they had their troubles together was also recognized--but their union as a unit made them legends in our global culture.

Well now: some folks have asked "how does your work blend astrology with psychology--and what does a mini-consultation look like?" (I do those too ** .)Two different queries about Love: first, from a 33-year-old woman from Utah (that's the American West to us), who is a late-born Taurus. She had some disappointments in love--and wanted to know if she should consider dating again or just give up trying. You be the judge by my words:

Taurus in love: May 19^th, 1978

Yep, seven Fixed signs: “I’m going to dig in my heels and hold my breath too, and I’m not going to yield…hey, wait! I just got run over by the bulldozer of Life! Ouch! Unfair!!” Honey, I waited TWICE for 30 years for two different Life Partners to come back to me; want to compare the point of view about being willing to face Changes in Attitude? This is what’s stopping you: it’s not that you’re unable to find Love, but that you can’t accept the adaptations. But you DESERVE Love and Happiness as much as anyone else (plus you’ve got great qualities in this chart!) (I also said that because you have an issue with pride and your personality. But you’re a great gal! I mean that.)

I taught college lit and told my students in one lesson, “If you say you can’t, you won’t.” That’s what’s stopping you. It’s about Safety, Security, & Stability—but it’s also about Fear: yours. Not a fault, but rather, you need to learn personal boundaries. You also subconsciously come across as a Cancer-Crab (I’m a 4^th house moon too, so trust me): “Home is my security! I must have my safety zone!” That’s fine, if you respect your own needs and don’t let a partner walk over you. (A good friend of mine, also an astrologer, has this same moon in Libra. Same issue for 14 years.)

Your Mars/male attraction-energy-assertion-action in Leo is a RADIANT magnet for a guy; gee, talk about “the moth to the flame!” You’ve got “It!”: sex appeal. But you also want to be adored, admired, honored, and in general, worshipped as The Queen. Okay. Just be sure you don’t demand too much and give too little. Mars in your 1^st house of Personality & Appearance makes you a hot-lookin’ woman! That’s a lesson for your soul to learn “Be careful how you use it. You need to be mindful of not only who you attract, but why you selected who you have!” (By the way, your “19” birthday = “10” (1+9), which IS the sign of Leo, the Sun. That’s even more of what I’ve just said.)

Speakin’ of Love, the Lady Herself in charge of that realm (Venus) says you need Gemini-like Communication and Connections to be maintained with Friends, Groups, Associations, and Networks (in the 11^th house). Be sure your potential cowboys are respectful and mindful of these aspects of your life. You’re a great social butterfly!

Your Saturn (Life’s Tough Lessons that Need to be Mastered) in Leo is about learning to accept this (above). In your 2^nd house of Self-Values, it’s about NOT giving up!! You have to face the responsibility of your choices, not only for who you are, but what you are, and why it works (or doesn’t). Saturn and your Taurus Sun are NOT matched well in the Fixed signs of Leo and Taurus; this is something you subconsciously picked up as signals from Daddy, and since Saturn & the Sun represent two of the male-energy/role models in a woman’s life, look at him and DON’T be that way. It’s also WHY you’re drawing the wrong type: it’s as though you’re trying to fix (and yet be yourself in the same way) the men in your life.

Well, this is a great idea for the new year, and I commend you for it. For starting points, let’s look at your astrological factors of how women attract men and what they indicate: the Sun/Self-Identity-Father Figures-Authority Figures, and Mars/Sexuality-Assertiveness-Aggressiveness-Action.

Your Sun in Libra naturally attracts partners who compromise, want balance and harmony, and are “sharing” in nature; peacefulness, consideration, and respect are components. Since Venus is the directing planet of Libra, art, beauty, and music are also expressions of the sign (and the kind of man who would represent it for a woman).

By beauty, I would think the fashion industry (and yes, I do realize it attracts a lot of gay men. Sorry about that; I realize it limits the field—but it’s also about cosmetics, fabrics, and the sales end of marketing). In art and music, there’s a wider range, of course. In business, which certainly is an option, human resources, mediation, counseling, psychology (which certainly goes well with your 8^th house moon), customer service, and social support networks which encourage relationships (I’m thinking about who’s involved at places like E-Harmony and the other online sites. Do think about registering at them.)

Additionally, your Sun is placed in the 10^th house of Career and Status; this is Capricorn’s domain, so think about the executive management and placement industry who work with top-level men (and also those coming out with MBAs) as a source. Funny enough: your Mars in Capricorn not only makes YOU ambitious, but also waves a business-like pheromone at the men in this realm! Your Mars is placed in the 1^st house of Aries, so men who are self-motivated entrepreneurs, or who work in some form of the military or wear a uniform, act aggressively and with power, and enjoy being #1 in their field are excellent choices. I should wonder too if a military officer would be a good choice here. Interesting also: Jupiter, who indicates **Growth Opportunities, Good Luck (as a means of being pro-active), and Divine Blessings, is right alongside your Mars. Think Big: aim your sites at the top level of the executive chain! You would naturally appear as ** to such a man—he couldn’t help but notice.

Uranus sits right on your ascendant/Personality marker; I’m mentioning that because it’s SUCH a factor in your “I’m a rebellious soul; I like to do things DIFFERENTLY” approach. In Sagittarius, this would be involvement with travel, especially overseas or long-distance, higher education, the legal field, wilderness and forestry management, publishing, or sports, especially track and field.

I’d also note your Venus/Love Principle in Scorpio; she’s got a tough placement in that sign because Venus tends toward jealousy, spitefulness, and possessiveness in that sign—but it is passionate. Her placement in the 12^th house indicates this could be a significant weakness or undoing for you.

Just for information, you’ve got a VERY profound and dynamic configuration in your chart that finds its outlet in the 6^th house of day-to-day work activities and health matters, and in the sign Taurus too. I can’t overlook this, nor can I not say how INTENSE this can be—and how it may help you more socially. In Taurus, we would find not only the fashion/beauty industry (with help from Venus), but also body work, gourmet cooking, or anything that promotes or endorses “luxury treatments for the body and senses.” This configuration involves your personality’s spiritual awareness (Neptune), transformation, regeneration and power (Pluto), and mental acuity and communication (Mercury) from the 11^th house of Associations, Friends and Groups.

So...how does astrology work?

And what if (I) don't believe in it?

It works by gravity. And it doesn't matter about your beliefs: as long as you're in a human body form, you're going to undergo all the lessons that astrology is trying to teach you to be aware of: Life Experiences and how/why they're supposed to make you aware of the challenges and opportunities you're facing.

By gravity, astrology works on our endocrine system: the water and fluid levels of our hormone and neurotransmitters that affect our emotions and moods. The planets themselves in their alignments and movements activate various wavelengths of gravity that pull and tug on our internal organs--especially the endocrine organs. As they release their respective fluids in the small amounts that determine our physical and emotional changes, we react accordingly. The Sun also works in this manner on our bodies: we need solar rays to survive and be healthy. When solar activity (flares, sunspots, etc.) are radiated at the Earth, we physically undergo subtle but significant reception and changes. Obviously, the Moon works on our bodies in this manner; women embody this more apparently in their monthly reproductive cycles.

Astrology also functions as a mirror of our soul growth and progress. The planets are not just physical activators on our bodies--they are also physical facilitator-reminders of Life Episodes and Growth cycles that we are supposed to be learning. However, in our human vanity, we often ignore, refuse, decline, or just avoid much of the opportunity to DO something when a planet is trying to tell us "look here at this time frame in life and DO something about it." Thankfully, Our Creator had better plans for us, whether or not we know astrological concepts. So, it's not a matter of "I believe" or not: we're ALL experiencing astrology and its impact on our lifetime.

Void-of-course Moon & timing phases

Understanding the Void-of-Course Moon

The Moon makes a complete circle through the twelve signs every 28.5 days and spends approximately 2.5 days in each sign. There is a time, however, when this connection is interrupted and we "float" between signs. This is the time we call the “void-of-course Moon”: until it enters the next sign.

The Moon goes void of course every two days or so, and this can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Sometimes, the Moon is void of course for two consecutive days.

There is a distinctive quality to the energy during a void-of-course Moon: judgment is impaired, and many people have a hard time making decisions. Business meetings can go astray, and people find it difficult to work together as a group.

Here are some suggested ways to plan ahead and use the void-of-course Moon in positive ways.

1. Double-check info and facts when starting new projects.

2. Reorganize, clean out, get rid of, and eliminate excess and imbalances in your environment or work place. When the Moon enters into the next sign, there is a noticeable improvement.

3. Spiritual pursuits are heightened because there is no demand to act on distracting priorities.

4. Rewrite, edit, and correct: new ways of expressing ideas can be found during this time.

5. Take inventory of your surroundings: lost items can be found that were overlooked.

6. Rest. The moon’s energies will allow for a “time off” phase to your body and mind.

7. Plan ahead: make “to do” lists and consider alternative choices.

9. Unscheduled social events can be fun because there is no specific energy that would impact them.

10. Travel may be less stressful.

What Not to Do during This Time

1. Do not start important or life-changing projects during the void-of-course Moon: The outcome will not be what you want or expect.

2. Try to avoid meeting new people: A first date or job interview should not be scheduled during the void. Try and not start a new job when the Moon is void of course, or ask for an alternative date.

Plans made during the void-of-course Moon do not turn out as expected: This can be used in a constructive way. By making plans during a void-of-course Moon, it is sometimes possible to steer clear of these events.

3. Avoid major purchases.

Just a note about things that you should know: when we move across lines of latitude or longitude, our birth charts may vary in ways that affect timing phases and impacts of major events in our lives. It's a good reason to consult with me how to explain the "new you" that has manifested since the move took place, and if it has indeed altered your chart's results. What can happen is that you create a sort of "alternate reality" where timing runs simultaneously both in your "relocated" position and your place of birth.

"The four (Ceres, Vesta, Juno, and Pallas) major asteroids represent the Emerging Feminine Consciousness of the 21st century. In the symbolic language of astrology, the goddess asteroids provide new archetypes that specifically addressed the current psychological and social issues that arose from this activation of the feminine principle. Only two of the usual planets, the Moon and Venus, represent feminine archetypes, and these are of the mother and the wife. Until the asteroids, astrology had to fit all other women's experiences into masculine- defined archetypes. What was needed was a set of symbols by which to describe the other avenues of feminine expression that exist today. During the years since 1972 when astrologers have observed the significance of asteroids in birth charts, they have uncovered a wealth of information that adds insight and understanding above and beyond that gained from the usual ten planets.

The Asteroid Goddesses in the Charts of Men

Just as the planets named after male gods pertain to the lives of women, these asteroids named for female goddesses are also important in the lives of men. The recognition and honoring of one's contrasexual side completes and strengthens the personality, embracing the unintegrated energies that are often sources of trouble.

Ceres expands on the Moon's symbolism by further illuminating the relationship of a man to his mother and also to women and other nurturing figures in his adult life. In addition, Ceres signifies a man's own tender, caregiving side and the ways in which this part of his nature can find expression. Typical manifestations of Ceres energies in a man are teaching and mentoring, pediatrics and pedagogy, farming and gardening, cooking and nutrition, medicine and therapy, ecology and environmental protection, and, of course, his part in helping his own children thrive and grow.

Pallas, for a man as well as a woman, can symbolize his capacity for strategy, his quest for clarity and truth, his sense of justice, the acquisition of skill and ingenuity in useful arts, and the ability to channel life energy for healing. Just as she can in women, Pallas can signify either a man's rejection of the feminine within himself, or the drive to integrate the opposite sexual polarity into his psyche. The placement of Pallas can also suggest how a man perceives the strong, independent women in his life. This usually has to do with his sense of his own competence.

Juno can signify a man's style of dealing with marriage and other forms of partnership, including, in some cases, business partnerships. Her placement determines how the struggle between the self and the other plays out, and whether the partnerships a man enters into are likely to be equal or unequal. Juno may also show the sort of wife a man is likely to pick, and his attitude toward married women in general. This asteroid has to do with the man in his procreative role as husband and father, and, by extension, in any joint venture for the production of a new entity. Just as she does for a woman, Juno may also show how a man deals with the infidelity of a partner.

Vesta signifies a man's relationship to himself as a complete being, apart from relationships with others. Her placement can suggest to a man how he can best become still, look within, and tend to Deity or his inner spirit. Just as she does in women, Vesta can also signify a man's urge to conserve and preserve the home, the state, the culture and its institutions.

Ceres can be seen as one of the Earth Mother archetypes: she deals with the subject’s externalization of caring and comfort to others—in effect, how the individual, regardless of gender, “mothers” another. Ceres can also play a role in mother-daughter power struggles in a “Snow White” dynamic with the “mirror-mirror on the wall” issue of blossoming adolescence and a jealous parent.

Vesta indicates how and what an individual will sacrifice him/herself for regarding a social or personal cause or belief; a way of giving up something in service to the community, society, or for personal growth in areas like religious retreats or isolation for spiritual growth. Emily Dickinson’s withdrawal from responsibilities and social contact in order to dedicate herself to her poetry and writing is an example of a Vestal energy. Another Vestal archetype would be the men who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Juno represents the bonds and commitments of marriage, fidelity, and ownership of rights within a relationship. It shows how an individual will value and validate his/her status as a Significant Other as well as personal preferences for a mate. The separate-but-equal identity of a woman in a man’s world is represented by the lessons of Juno. The ongoing media struggles of Tiger Woods and his wife Elin would easily represent this archetype.

Pallas Athena represents the power of Creative Manifestation and acting as a spokesperson for those who need a protector, especially in gender rights issues or human rights. The DVD series about “The Secret” is an archetype, as well as Amnesty International, and the “Peaceful Warrior.” Pallas represents the ability to focus and stay on target for a goal, as well as manifestations of prosperity, success, and reward. Persistence, determination, and endurance are tests that Pallas uses to teach the psyche. Activism and participation in group or social functions that champion the underdog or defend those less capable are in this realm.

Chiron the Centaur as the Wounded Healer-Mentor in charts

Chiron is the key to a Cosmic quest for learning higher Universal values to promote growth of our soul by searching for a Teacher. It is also a search for the way to heal psychological wounds and integrate the lesson into whole-ness. This is done by blending the skills of a teacher (which is also Sagittarian in nature) and the quest for truth (also Sagittarian) as a separate identity. Last, consider the glyph, or symbol for Chiron. It appears to be a stylized key. It represents an esoteric key or tool to open a door: the doorway of change in a very personalized search in our lives for answers. And to find answers, we seek a Teacher, a Mentor, to help us learn those mysteries of Life. So we find Chiron in our Chart, to help us find what and why and whom we are searching, in that role of a Guide.

Rulership: The natural Planetary Sponsor-Director of a sign's energy focus. This position allows the planet's potential to be delivered in its proper manner through the sign & psyche.

Detriment: the sign opposite to the one it rules. The sign is uncomfortable; a frustrated environment for the planet to express itself.

Exaltation: the sign that creates the most powerful complement for the planet’s energies.

Fall: A sign opposite its exaltation. This is the weakest, least effective position for the planet to be in.

(One memory trick I use to remember this is that “The Exalted May Fall” if they abuse power. I also think of “Research and Development {R & D}” for Rules and Detriments.)

NOTE: If a planet in the sign of its fall or detriment is placed in its natural house, or a house which corresponds to its sign of exaltation, then some of the weakness would be neutralized. The same principle applies also to planets found in their dignity and exaltation. The Sun exalted in Aries would be more challenged in the seventh house (natural house of Libra) or the eleventh house (natural house of Aquarius).

A planet is strengthened (dignified) if it falls within the sign that it rules. For example, the Moon in Cancer is considered "strong" (well-dignified). Seventeenth century astrologer William Lilly compared rulership to a king on his throne, with considerable dignity. If a planet is in the sign opposite that which it rules, it is said to be weakened (detriment), for example the moon in Capricorn.

In addition to Essential Dignity, the traditional astrologer considers Accidental Dignity of planets. This is placement by house in the chart under examination. Accidental dignity describes the planet's "ability to act". So we might have, for example, Moon in Cancer, dignified by rulership, is placed in the 12th house it would have little scope to express its good nature. The 12th is a cadent house as are the 3rd, 6th and 9th and planets in these houses are considered weak or afflicted. On the other hand, Moon in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th would be more able to act as these are Angular houses.

Planets in Succedent houses of the chart (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) are generally considered to be of medium ability to act. As well as Accidental Dignity, there are a range of Accidental Debilities, such as retrogradation, Under the Sun's Beams, Combust, and so forth.

Signs shown in parentheses show ancient rulerships. Pluto has not yet been firmly established as it is the most recent planet discovery. Sakoian and Acker’s The Astrologer’s Handbook lists Pluto in exaltation in Leo; this would put its fall in Aquarius. Most likely, it rules Scorpio and gives dignity to Aries; its detriment is likely in Taurus. Mars was the ancient ruler of Scorpio and therefore is somewhat dignified in Scorpio, and so on.

Conjunction - Union of two ideals and energy sources;

a tag-team partnership of reaction

The conjunction is considered the most intense and powerful aspect; it is like having a two-headed creature. Here, both planets operate almost as one; they share a common theme of mutual energy--and purpose. It's not always a successful match for the personality: it can sometimes be like driving with one foot on the brake and the other on the gas pedal. A conjunction has a plus-or-minus (applying or separating) arc/range of 8 degrees, although the Sun and Moon are given up to 10 degrees as the Primary Lights of Consciousness and Subconscious in the psyche.

The conjunction image is like a small bomb with a fuse. Light the fuse, and the explosion of energy that results can be overwhelming for action or resistance within the individual's choice of responses.

Opposition - I stand off against (until I compromise) stalemate that needs balance

The opposition is next: its symbol looks like a diagonal infinity; I liken it to an interlocked pair of rings. The dynamic of an opposition is like that of a tug-of-war: both planets are vying for their place as leader. The resolution is that of compromise: BOTH planets must find a mutual agreement.

Square - I reluctantly acknowledge

the square wheel that takes friction to make smooth

A square is a difficult aspect: it offers great frustration, but also great resolution and potential once it HAS been realized. As with any other aspect, it's not done-and-finished once it's been understood by the individual, but the square is an indication of spiritual evolution that is being mastered. A square looks like a a box--or a square! It has a typical range of 5-7 degrees.

Trine - I willingly yield to; this opportunity is too easy! and
(may indicate laziness)

The trine is a pleasant aspect; it indicates a benevolent interaction between two planets and their energies. Trines are often considered supportive and beneficial, but some people can ignore the opportunities that trines provide because it seems to make things so easy. A trine looks like a pyramid or triangle; this makes sense because the three-sided shape is the strongest form in building something. It has a typical range of 5-7 degrees.

Sextile - I cooperate with; flexibility

A sextile's energy and response is casual. It's a milder version of the trine, and sometimes can go unnoticed because it's not a strong energy pattern. It has a typical arc of 5-6 degrees.

Quincunx - I cannot achieve resolution; that itch is driving me crazy and can’t be answered!

By my perspective, the quincunx is the aspect that does more annoying, frustration, irritation, and disruption than the opposition, square, or conjunction. It only has an arc of 3-4 degrees at most, but when two planets are in its range of contact, it antagonizes both of them--and no compromise, negotiation, balancing act, or happy ending is offered.

Sometimes two planets will be caught in a forked Y-shaped configuration of two quincunxes; the "head" of the focal point is where the tension must find its release. This pattern is called a Yod, and is also known as the Finger of God.

It indicates an EXTREMELY intense dynamic of energy, especially at the planet or position that gets the outcome: the individual is driven by forces that seem extraordinary in an effort to resolve this most unusual duel between the two quincunxes.

As mentioned earlier (http://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=6346422041345747453&postID=2589449833941222696), aspects represent the dynamics of cooperation or resistance between planets; a kind of dance between two distributors of energy. With some aspect patterns, the relationship is fluid, vibrant, resourceful, and collaborative; in other cases, it's a duel between (and among) disgruntled participants. (Aspects can work in pairs, trios, or even quads.)

Which planets are matched and how this is determined is done through the geometry of astrology, keeping in mind a specific range of contact called "arcs." An arc is like an individual's arm span: as far as he or she can reach, that's within their arc of contact. Some objects may be closer or just at fingertip range; this also is a condition of the arc and aspect formed.

I prefer the five major "hard" ones most commonly used, and one minor: the quincunx. (Note: Even though it's a minor, the quincunx is not easily managed.) Each has its own range of mathematical reach for contact with another planet's potential dynamics; if either is beyond the specific range of encounter specified for an aspect, then neither are engaged.

(A more involved but advanced option is to consider whether the mathematical aspects between two planets are approaching: like two magnets attracting each other--or separating: losing their attraction and drifting apart. If applying, the soul's experience is to LEARN this circumstance; if separating, the soul has already learned this dynamic and is getting a refresher class.)

Like the Caped Crusader, there are a variety of archetypes (social role models) found within literature--and psychological astrology. Carl Jung used the concept of archetypes to identity these role models through mythology as examples of the life patterns that the zodiac signs personify. Note that there are male and female archetypes. To me, Batman is a Scorpio type of role model: fighting the Underworld figures by using the dark of night and a cave as his hide-out/power.

Holst called his piece "a series of mood pictures." He seemed to consider The Planets a progression of life. "Mars" perhaps serves as a rocky and tormenting beginning; it was written in 1914, and clearly forecasts the upcoming devastation of World War I. In contrast, the gentle restrains of "Venus" seems to provide an answer to "Mars" and the concept of Venus as "the bringer of peace" helps aid that claim. "Mercury" and its delightfully quick movements can be thought of as the messenger between our world and the other worlds. Perhaps "Jupiter" and its optimistic nature represents the "prime" of life, even with the overplayed central melody, which was later arranged to the words of "I vow to thee, my country."

"Saturn" can be viewed as indicative of Holst's later mature style, and also reflects the death of Holst's father. Through "Saturn" it can be said that old age is not always peaceful and happy. The movement may display the ongoing struggle for life against the odd supernatural forces. This notion may be somewhat outlandish, but the music seems to lend credence to this. "Saturn" is followed by "Uranus, the Magician," a quirky scherzo displaying a robust musical climax before the tranquility of the female choir in "Neptune" enchants the audience.

Using the moon's phases to work with schedules and timing of events is something that connects with everyone--if they're willing to watch and see the results.

Using timing and the knowledge of when to take action on something is called electional astrology. As much as people laughed at it, Nancy Reagan was very serious about using timing in her husband's presidency. That's why he was sworn in during the early morning hours of his elected offices; she was using astrological information--and she did the same thing for his speeches and other presentations.She and President Reagan were not the only high-level people to use astrology for things like timing events, decisions, or other plans. So did financier J. P. Morgan, who was known to say about it, "Billionaires use astrology. Millionaires don't." (Financial astrological consultations are a huge part of the market and has been openly discussed by some of the bigger money managers.)*

At the new moon, plans should be made: brainstorming, networking, designing a new project or endeavor.

*At the 4th quarter moon, plans should be concluded or corrections made.An eclipse works similarly, but both types are a positive reinforcement of a part of the psyche:

That "blue moon" thing also comes up here: because it means that a "second" new moon has fallen in that month, it means that there is twice the opportunity to start a project, or to revive or jump-start a project that was delayed or never moved forward.

Astrological Fear of Success

Do you know someone who is afraid of accomplishment? How about someone whose astrological patterns show "a fear of success": someone who subconsciously attracts or manifests conditions which sabotages his/her life (or that of someone in collaboration) so that plans go astray in spite of the best intentions or desires.

It's as if they generate a force field of Mercury/Mars retrograde in their lives. These actions are externalized through others, especially key family members, in the form of illness, accident, and other forms of controlled chaos. Each time a plan is set or about to be implemented, someone close to the subject has an event upon which the subject then postpones, cancels, or delays whatever he/she was going to activate, again, with a second party's involvement. (Hence, the Mars/Mercury retrograde parallel.) I've known Crabs who do this with controlled helplessness, but this is slightly different: the subject DOES want to move forward or activate a project or goal, but is too emotionally caught up in the lives of others.

I believe there are patterns which may be clues: the moon in a water sign (especially Cancer) with Mars in tight or inharmonious aspect (conjunction, square, opposition--or even quincunx); Capricorn ascendant; I've seen this twice--and a cardinal sign Sun (or the cusp of Cancer-Leo: the Lion for dramatic effort). The Aries sun type WANTS to initiate or activate, but keeps being sidetracked; the Libra type is too caught up in relationship issues, including co-dependency. And the Capricorn ambition to achieve is legendary; in this case, the objective (or mountain top) that is never reached.

A Jupiter/Saturn opposition can also indicate this: the person has great large-scale ideas (Jupiter), but is frustrated (or worried) about achieving them (Saturn). On the other hand, this could also indicate someone who DOES achieve in spite of obstacles or delays.

Again, psychological astrology looks at the individual and offers options: there is not a "you will do this" condition, but rather a set of choices. Success or frustration is one example of how and why psychological astrology shows us the way we open or close the doors in our lives.

Gay or Lesbian signs? Why does it matter to you?

Let me make this statement up front because it seems that some people look for this kind of information: there isn't any "guaranteed" sign for someone who is gay, lesbian, trans-gender, or bisexual. Yes, some signs and aspects have more potential--but to label them here is pointless. It's pointless because as soon as I do it (and it's been written enough in astrology books on that subject), someone is going to label someone else--and I'm not going to join in that foolish game.

I've known many people from every sign who had partners from their own gender. It was their individual choice, and their respective signs were as different and unique as they were. Trying to identify them by a birth sign has no real bearing.

The temptation and frustration of Lilith, the Dark Moon, is one overlooked by many astrologers, healers, and those who seek answers about psychology, astrology, and the psyche. This is not a part of the chart that is eagerly sought: by her own nature, Lilith denies, disables, and thwarts the most earnest and sincere intentions and pursuits. Her role is not one that is welcomed: she represents all that we find just beyond our grasp, even though we try relentlessly to overcome the obstacles and find satisfaction. Lilith, therefore, shows us what we can NOT have, no matter how badly we desire it. One way is to consider personally and professionally what kind of "type" an individual is on a letter range from A through E as follows:

Type A is someone who knows from childhood what he/she will make their major emphasis in life: they often begin studying the subject or skill at a very young age and stay focused on it. They may also show tenacity and innate abilities at this young age; Mozart is an extreme example. Often, the child who declares to adults what his/her life goals are and then achieves them is a good alternative.

Type B is someone who learns somewhere in their teen years about what he/she wants to do; again, many musicians learn their passion in life after seeing a concert and being inspired to learn guitar by their hero. The Hero stands out as a motivating factor: someone who acts as a guiding beacon to the individual.

Type C individuals often wander or bounce through several career goals and objectives throughout life, and sometimes find their true calling much later, even into their 50s. They may or may not have an established-but-not-satisfactory career already planned or in action, but they are involved in efforts to find their niche in life. The 29th degree of a sign is one to be recognized as a crucial point to consider. In my own teacher's view, the 29th degree was a critical marker of intense action, activity, and energy: "on the razor's edge" was how it was described. It was the indication of an extreme nature and release, for better or worse--but often an over-dramatic outlet for that sign, especially when coupled with a planet.

There was only one time, he said, when a 29-degree point was favored: the last day of Aries. A person born on this day (and one of my "older sisters" is April 19) is someone who can manifest goals and objectives at the last critical minute and therefore create results under extreme deadlines.

The following are other views of the 29th degree. I should note in numerology that a person born on the 29th day of the month is said to be fated for heavy-duty Life Experiences that their soul has otherwise avoided learning. Also known as the Anaretic Degree, defective vision is noted with this degree. It’s the weakest point in the sign it represents; tired and often showing more of the next sign than the sign it’s in. The planet and house placement is always getting ready to make a change and the 29^th degree adds a decision-making complication to the house. Able to see both sides of an issue, there is oscillation between one view and the other and a struggle to make any decision at all. Decisions are put off or there is a continuous re-evaluation due to new information. At the end of his rope, the individual may make a quick decision, simply to do something, but this takes on the characteristic of Too Much or Too Little. Metaphorically, he may dive into the pool before checking to see if it has water.

A placement of a planet in the 29th degree in a house automatically makes the ability to manifest the characteristics of that house structure more fuzzy, and the interaction with the people of that house more vague and less decisive. Sun in the 29th degree often causes a major career change in mid life. This position can slow down career success because of poor decision-making skills. Women with their Sun in a 29th degree have a tendency to marry men who are ineffectual in some way: trouble keeping a job, born followers, too passive, emotional problems. Again this is related to the concept of poor decision-making (both on the part of the woman and on the part of the husband).

A 29th degree in a progressed chart often stimulates the characteristics, either positive or negative of the relationship, and a last fling jump for the characteristics of the sign, in the house that it is in. Saturn in 29th Capricorn is the degree of the workaholic. The individual can’t seem to get enough hard work. But s/he runs into obstacles in getting it, and often vacillates between working to death, and no work.

If a natal planet is found at 29 degrees of any sign, also known as the Anaretic degree, there can be some real issues with decision-making in that part of the personality represented by the energies of the planet. The native may evaluate and re-evaluate situations before making a move one day, and the next day, jump into the action without listening to himself or herself! For example, if Mars is at 29 degrees, the native may devise many plans of actions, worry excessively about the possible actions and different routes to take, and then execute a spontaneous action that is contrary to the decision!

Someone with 29 degrees of Mercury may agonize over decisions in his/her life, and vacillates between talking too much and too little.

Besides decision-making problems, vacillation, and jumping into situations blindly, the 29th degree is also associated with a sense of urgency. It's the last degree of the zodiac sign, and there can be a real sense of urgency surrounding the characteristics and associations of the particular sign.

In progressions, when, for example, the Sun enters the 29th degree, the native's year can be crisis-oriented. CaptainCorneous the grounded Goat-fish – These individuals are the masters of junk yard recycling: “Just because it’s broken don’t mean it can’t be used.” Also seen in the fertilizer business and in the pastures of Sloggytarian farmers: “One man’s waste shouldn’t go to waste.”

Aquire-ous the social networker – Often seen in community centers, schoolyard soccer, basketball, football, or baseball games as referees, coaches, and umpires who rule against the home team, their motto is “We will extend our neighbors a helping hand. We will extend two hands, and help ourselves to our neighbors!”

Piskees, the two fish – Known for collecting wading pools and filling them with frogs and other amphibians, and fishing in barrels and swimming pools and wondering why they haven’t got a bite.

A new set of signs? "No!"

D'oh! NO, you did NOT get a "new" astrological sign! I don't care what the news services are saying! Here's a comment that pretty much sums up what the fuss is all about. And if you ARE that concerned, call or write to me to discuss your chart: I can interpret it both ways, and yes, BOTH ways are accurate:

Fans of the Zodiac have been bombarded with the unsettling news that their astrological sign may not be what they thought.

The horror of switching from Gemini to Taurus had people rushing to the Web for answers, sending searches for "zodiac signs" into the stratosphere.

So has your sign changed? It all depends on what kind of astrology you follow.

It may come as a surprise that there are different branches of astrology. A main Eastern form, for example, called Sidereal astrology, looks to the background stars, those famous constellations, as its guide.

Western astrology -- which uses the zodiac -- has its signs fixed to the seasons. Most Westerners, and all those horoscope pages we eagerly check, go by the zodiac. These signs follow what early astrologers called star signs, whose reference points are the tropics that form a ring around the earth. The zodiac is based on our relationship to the sun, not the stars.

The back story: About 2,000 years ago, the astrological signs and the astronomical ones were the same. But not anymore. The locations of the signs are based on the sun's location on the first day of spring. That location in the sky has slowly drifted westward because of something called "precession" -- the earth continually wobbles (a scientific term for a slight motion) every 26,000 years. Since the constellations were first identified, they have shifted some 30 degrees. Translation: The signs have slipped about a month westward, relative to the stars.

What this means to you: If you follow astrology that is linked to the constellations, your sign would go from say, a Gemini to a Taurus. You could even have a 13th sign, Ophiuchus, which you may have read about.

"It's a huge point of confusion for the public," says Bing Quock, assistant director of Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. For those who follow Western astrology, "astrologers are not talking about the constellations at all. When an astrologer says the sun is in a certain sign, they're talking about the sign, the location relative to the equinox. They're not talking about the location of the constellations. "

In short, if you follow the Sidereal astrology, the Eastern branch, your sign may have shifted. (And most likely, no surprise to you at all: This news is hundreds of years old).

But for the rest of us, our horoscope, and our signs, are still the same.
